Bill Porter is an interesting man. At birth he contracted Cerebral Palsy as a result of a medical error at birth. I am not going to call him disabled as he is not. However, he has some disabilities. His speech is difficult. He has a hard time walking. He labors to communicate.
His is also the subject of the Hallmark movie
Door-to-Door. Against certain odds, he began his professional career selling for The Watkins Company, competitors to the old Fuller Brush Company.
Expectations were low. His disabilities were negative factors. Yet, Bill Porter found a way to convert one of the companies worst territories into an incredible success story.
Decades ago, his mother instilled in him the mantra of PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE. Bill certainly needed a major dose of both. He had many doors slammed in his face. Over time, he developed relationships that ultimately lead to his award as Salesman of the Year in the late 90’s. It is quite a story. It really was orchestrated against all odds.
As the new year dawns, especially with some of the challenges we face, Patience and Persistence have never been more important. 2012 begins with adversity we have endured for the past several years. There are struggles we all face. Life is a bit more complex. Persistence in the face of current events is of immense importance. Patience may play an even more vital role.
In spite of the setbacks with which we are faced, this has the great opportunity to make us all stronger…and more successful. Bill Porter found that it made him a better person. Long after his mom passed away and a friend for which he genuinely cared suddenly died, he was still exhibiting Patience and Persistence. It was, indeed, the foundation of his existence.
How are you coping with today’s challenges? How is life treating you as 2012 dawns?
Bill Porter would never have a special friend or a family of his own. He would live his life, largely, in solidarity. He lived and lost like the rest of us. Yet, even in the face of overwhelming odds he found a way to parlay his disabilities into stunning success.
What about you? How are you going to make 2012 different? What are your professional and personal goals?
Most importantly, what is your outlook? Can Patience and Persistence be your rallying cry? And if it is, how do you intend to fine tune it in 2012?
Yes, these times are unique. My 87 year-old mom says she has never seen anything like this. She was born in 1924. She has lived through The Great Depression and World War II. That is quite a statement.
However, there is great promise in the year ahead. What will you make of this promise? Will you parlay it into success and fulfillment? Can these be the proudest and most stunning days of your life?
The answer is in the days ahead. However, there is optimism in the air. Become a part of it. Make this the first day of your new adventure. Above all, face the year with determination. After all, Patience and Persistence demand it.
